My Coach For The Super Eagles!  –Odegbami

My Coach For The Super Eagles!  –Odegbami

I do not like to bring up the issue of coaches, because we forget easily.Let us talk about a few foreign coaches since Clemens Westerhof, my friend, the acclaimed best coach in Nigeria’s history, was engaged to coach the national team in 1989.

Who was Clemens in the world of coaching when he was hired? Was he a world -class coach? What club or country🐽 of renown did he coach? What trophies of substance did he win?

The truth is that he was a nobody. Nobody knew him. How he was hired will make Jose Peseiro’s case look very good.Clemens started rather poorly but ended after 5 years on a glorious note. Throughout that period, he enjoyed uncommon privileges, access to power and resources arranged by the interest that brought him into the system.

Also Read: Peseiro….Going, Going, Gone! –OdegbamiBy 1994, at the end of the USA World Cup, so sour was his relationship with some players, some media, and even leadership of the football association that he abandoned the job and did not even bother to return to Nigeria.  Thus ended his era. Then, it was widely reported that he was not even the brain behind the success of the team on the field of play. A section of the media led public opinion in questioning his technical competence, crediting his success to his trainer/assistant, Jo Bonfrere. That’s how, supported by some media, a trainer was elevated to national coach of Nigeria, in total betrayal of trust unknown in football at that level.

Jo Bonfrere was a ‘nobody’ as well in getting that job. He had no world-class credentials. Yet, he took a team brimming with exceptionally talented footballers to Atlanta ’96 and returned with an Olympic Gold medal. Like Westerhof before him, the Super Eagles were his launch pad to his coaching success and any credible credentials.Incidentally, he too soon fell out with the authorities, and the cycle of foreign coaches continued intermittently after that, with occasional punctuations by Nigerian coaches for brief periods, until  another foreign coach was hired to take the team to the 1998 World Cup.

Bora Milutinovic was the first ‘world-class’ coach to be hired by Nigeria. He was so ‘good’ that he was the only coach in the world at the time to have taken 4 national teams (none was African) to the World Cup.  His tenure as Nigeria’s national team coach may probably be the worst in Nigeria’s history. He did not even return to Nigeria from his disastrous outing at France ’98. That much said for a ‘world-class’ coach.

Armchair critics, however, would have colourful answers to defend the tenures of all these White foreign coaches. Yet, Westerhof ‘failed’ at Algiers ‘90 (he did not win the trophy) before, 4 years later, with a team brimming with talent, he won AFCON.

Yet, they would also describe some of the Nigerian coaches that took over the national team on interim basis for a few weeks or months to AFCON (like Westerhof did in 1990), but ended without winning, as ‘failures’, never giving them a chance again.

Therefore, it is preposterous how a national team that was ranked 5th in the World in 1994, that won AFCON twice since then, could actually hire a foreign coach in 2023 and set a target of a semi-final berth at AFCON for him, when Nigeria should be aiming by now to win the World Cup. That’s Paseiro’s case. Some things do not add up.

It is about ‘experts’ not understanding the dynamics of the world today and Nigeria’s place in it, and the interconnectivity with every facet of life, including football. The future of Nigeria hinges as much with the country’s economy, politics, etc as with its sports.

Victor Oladokun and I exchanged a few messages this week. I do not have his permission to quote him here, so I will not. But the following in my own response:

“There shall be a new World Order in the aftermath of the several wars going on dangerously around the world now. Africa must be ready, and Nigeria must take the lead in creating a united front for Africa, and negotiating from a position of strength. That’s where our soft-power ‘innocuous’ tools come into play to be deployed.

“So, the ‘war’ must be fought cleverly, using unorthodox ‘weapons’. We have used conventional means for over 500 years and failed…time to think and strategize differently”.

The weapons I am referring to above are cultural tools – music, dance, film, fashion, and sports, areas that Africa can dominate, earn respect and relevance. After 5 Centuries, Africa’s  physical and mental enslavement and plundering of its mineral, spiritual, institutional, cultural and even human resources must stop. Africa is not ‘designed’ by other civilisations to succeed and thrive to become an advanced culture.

In the ongoing war of the Civilisations, nothing is exempt as a weapon. Indeed, advanced countries thrive only because they keep Third World countries down. Africa must break loose and be free from this stranglehold.

It has been clear for decades that the most populous Black nation on earth, rich and with some of the smartest and most educated people on earth doing great things in and for other countries around the world, should lead the African continent in negotiate Africa’s place in  the new Scramble for Africa.

There is a change coming to the world and Africa must be an integral part of that change and an active participant in its own fate. Professor Patrice Lumumba of Kenya describes it as going to that Table of Civilisations not as waiters this time, but as diners, equal partners with other civilisations.

This must be fundamental to the decisions we all take from now onwards in all the things we do and the decisions we take.

That’s why we must shelve and sheath anything that portrays the Nigerian as inferior to any Race in all endeavours, because the Nigerian is not. He is found everywhere, in the arts and sciences,  excelling. Coaching in football is not rocket science! These days, without ‘foreign coaches’, Nigeria has conquered the once-exclusive world of music and dance. Film, fashion and the arts are fast catching up.  Sport, the most powerful of them all, is still on the runway, waiting for the right buttons to be pressed in order to take off.

Nigeria must take the lead in Africa to deploy sport (football in particular) as an essential soft-power weapon to contribute its quota to determining the future of Africa. It is a responsibility that those of us in the sport industry must wear like a cloak every day, and remember in all our dealings with the rest of the world, including who we hire to coach one of our most visible and valuable assets to date in the world.

Nigeria’s ambition should match its talent and size.Through the decades since 1985, we have seen the evidence that Nigeria can become the first African country to win the World Cup. Even the late legend, Pele, and other renowned coaches from other countries have expressed the same sentiment that Nigeria has the talent to win the World Cup before any other African country. But none of them said the country would do so by using foreign coaches. After all, they know that in history, no foreigner has ever won the World Cup for another country.

So why do we think it will be different with Nigeria? Unless, for selfish reason, we ridiculously and shamefully limit our ambition to getting to semi-final of the African Championship in hiring a foreign coach.

Nigeria is going through very challenging times as a country right now. The challenges are almost overwhelming, yet no one is clamouring for us to bring foreign ‘experts’ to fix the country. Why should sport be different?  Why are other countries finding even our ‘poorly’ trained local Nigerian professionals good enough to help develop their own countries? We underestimate our people and their capacities.

Was it not only a few years ago that Samson Siasia was hailed as best coach of the year by FIFA at a certain level?

In a new World Order, patriotism is a key to national survival. There is no room for inferiority complex, or senseless squandering of resources on foreigners no better than Nigerians.Nigeria must now place her destiny in the hands of qualified and patriotic Nigerians. The Super Eagles must carry the banner of Nigeria proudly and without any dilution of its spirit to achieve ultimate greatness in the world. The coach of the Super Eagles must wear  the country’s ambition like a cloak.

If the price of the elevation of Nigeria, and the emancipation of the Black Race is that we ‘lose’ now to gain experience and eventual success, we must pay that price. That is the route to go.No more foreign coaches in Nigeria!

Let us sink or swim with Nigerians, even in football!

  • What the Super Eagles need is the best hand to handle the super eagles. Someone that will give us the much needed result. Whether he is Nigerian, Ghanian, European is not as important as what we need to achieve. I remember how Mr. Segun Odegbami clamoured for the sack of Gernort Rohr for an indigenous coach. After he was sacked, how far did Nigeria go under Eguavoen. We were eliminated in the second round of the nations cup. As if that was not enough, we failed to qualify for the world cup to a Ghanian side that even Ghanians had written off

    • That is where we get it wrong again. We keep talking about when they failed. The best coaches in the world also fail at one time of the other. Pesero was fumbling until he got to afcon. If it was a local coach he would have been sacked.

Segun odegbami said let us win or fisk with our own. Do you even have the money to higher your best in the world. No best coaches will come to Nigeria.

Pesero has used Nigeria to boost his CV I am not surprised the guy don run. Let’s begin to trust and give our own the time and the chance.

      • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

The only reason any coach (local or foreign) gets sacked in Nigeria is and has always been when they do not meet their targets.

Your claim that if Peserio were to be a local coach he would have been sacked is totally false.

Keshi was wobbling and fumbling from day 1 of his job (except the 3 matches vs CIV, Mali and Bfaso that one us the 2013 AFCON) till the last day when he failed to qualify for the 2015 AFCON

Christian Chukwu also wobbled and fumbled but was left alone on the job till when it was almost sure we wouldnt be in the 2006 WC in Germany

Siasia was fired after he failed to qualify for 2012 AFCON, Oliseh ran away when failure was imminent

Only Amodu was unfairly sacked even when he met all his targets….and his sack was championed by ignorant fans and media that conspired against him under the guise that he doesn’t play “BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL”

So once again, every SE has always had his job tied to set goals…….Peserio was fumbling but still qualified for AFCON, which is the barest minimum for any coach to remain on the job.

You can remind us which local coach in permanent capacity (apart from Amodu) was ever sacked just because he didn’t put a winning streak together…??

You said “Pesero has used Nigeria to boost his CV, I am not surprised the guy don run”…..LMAooo. I laughed and almost fell off my chair….LMAOoo.

Peserio don run from $50,000 (that only gets paid after 7 months of backlogs) to be shared with his assistants to $100,000 (paid regularly) and above elsewhere.

You will tell us if he failed to qualify for ordinary AFCON like your local coaches who also had same opportunity to “boost their own CVs too” just as peserio just did, if better others way bigger than what NFF was offering him would have come his way now.

If your local guadiolas had “improved their CVs” when they had their own turns to coach the SE, they wouldnt be waiting joblessly till whenever the SE coaching positon becomes vacant again, for us to hear about their exploits.

Your CV only gets “imp[roved” when you have just recorded success on your last job….!!

Mumu, did you even take time to read his comment, you here asking dumb question. Didn’t he mention westerhof also failing, but was given 4 years to assemble a team, was Rorh not given 6 years to coach the team, please what did we achieve. But when it comes to the local coaches you start giving them weeks or months to do miracles. Is that fair.

  • Thank you, Mr. Segun Odegbami. You and I are on the same page.

NFF should stop hiring foriegn coach because Nigeria also has what it takes to rule the world of

Mr. Segun Odegbami should not look at this issue from the top but from the root of the problem.

The local coach will continue to fail if they put an end to a few weeks or months contract from the NFF.

Siasia did that one or two times to rescue Nigeria but failed to qualify to Afcon.

If NFF can give our local or ex players at least two years contract, then they should not accept a few days contract from NFF.

Our own are the best for the job period.

Last but not least Mr. Segun Odegbami should look into this issue very well. He must not focus on Super Eagles coach alone.

“No matter how great our local coaches or ex players are if we don’t have sports men and women in NFF, Super Eagles and other national teams are going.”

Those in the current NFF now are the problem of our sports. If we must develop our and other sports, we have to put those who understand sports in the NFF.

Not these former politicians and business owners in charge of our sports, kai, it won’t work. Let me stop here because Nigerians hate the truth. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • This is My Problem with Segun Odegbami, So he is talking about Sinking when we have just Played a AFCON Final and we are preparing for World Cup Qualifier. This is that thing I say of Nigeria always pushing the self destruct button irrespective of Success. What does he mean Sink?? and @Omo9ja you are supporting this based on what are you guys Racist or What? So we must fail because we want a tribalist to handle our BALL!! NEVER. I dont support the average Nigerian Mentality Sink or Swim with our Own Rubbish!!! LEt me tell you @Omo9ja and Oga Segun Odegbami Nigeria has alot to learn about MOdern ball we are No Giants any longer We allowed that to be destroyed by NFF, Nigerian government and sports ministries of past and our Nigerian Indigeonous Coaches allowing it all basis of Sentiment, criminal nature and culture Bla Bla Bla. No way not any longer NO NIgeria Indigenous coaches and We Are Not SInking we will be building from this and Hopefull qualify for WC and WIn the NExt AFCON with a top Quality European Coach that Know’s African Ball.

I like European coaches for one Reason they will Not be deluded to thinking that NPFL have Players that can Match our European Exports. that Coupled with the Nuance and Know How of Coaching and it is a winning Formula especially with our Current Golden Generation,

WE DO NOT NEED SABOTAGING NOW!! #NOWAY!!!!!!!!!!

    • I am good with our Nigerian Exports coming from the Academies via Youth National Teams and then to Europe.. Although it seems LAden Bosso is hell bent on polluting the last avenue we have of talent as they have already destroyed NPFL with Corruption and Bribery and Age Cheating.. IF NPFL players MAke it Europe like Ighalo and Etebo did they will be discovered no doubt when they blow like Ighalo and Etebo did.

NO Indigenous coach for Now No Way Not even Amuneke. HE Will definitely be corrupted and Compromised as long as he is Nigeria it is a Given 100000%

    • Ugo do you have the money to pay your best white coaches. No sane white coach will stay here where salaries are not paid for months. Have you thought about that.

And we keep saying the local coaches are corrupt. Agreed some are. But what about the white coaches. Westerhof was selling players secretly then. There were so many wrong practices that were going on behind the scene then.

  • DiMastta 2 months ago

    As usual, Babalawo has spoken.

As usual, something must be killed as sacrifice.

    • Chudynak 2 months ago

I have always supported this thought pattern. However, we need to give the indigenous coaches all the free hand to operate so as to take responsibility for success or failure. The indigenous coaches should be bold enough to speak up when there is interference with their jobs and also toe the path of honour by dropping their letters on this account. That’s essentially the difference between whites and blacks

  • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

Hahahaha…..So now that Amuneke has applied for the SE job, if a Pitso Mosimane who has won well over 12 major titles (including 3 CAF Champions League titles) should also apply for the job, Amuneke with his 2 wins as Tanzania coach, academy demotion and relegation waters induced sack CV should be given the job ahead of him…..LMAOooo

So says the man who said Joseph Yobo was good enough to lead the SE to the 2022 World Cup after 6 years at the VIP section of comedy shows in Lagos….LMAOoo. Till date, the same Joseph Yobo has not gotten a coaching job anywhere, not even in Segun Odegbami’s own Sports Academy.

I really do not know how we got to this point where old men front mediocres as the next big coaching thing in Nigerian football.

In the past, local coaches earn the stripes of becoming SE strictly based on Merit…..Onigbinde’s CAF Cup winners cup win with Shooting stars circa 1984, Amodu Shuaibu’s several FA cup, WAFU cup and CAF cup wins circa 1993 and Stephen Keshi’s Togo and Mali experiences Circa 2010 (learning the ropes as SE assistant coach for almost half a decade) all readily come to mind.

Someone should please tell this albino to stop thinking he’s a caucasian……LMAOoo

    • Well said Doc its a shame that age is not a measuring stick for wisdom otherwise I wonder why a man of Dr. Segun’s ilk will be fronting mediocrity and short-termism over continuity and meritocracy even though Finidi may not have the necessary certified requirements to handle the SE atm he has a better chance of handling the SE than the much vaunted Amunike.

    • Dr. Drey can your poor system in Nigeria handle the likes of pitso. He proved that to succeed with eagles past coaches do not have the credentials. What credentials does zidane had as a coach before he began to win with Madrid. What about westerhof. What about Rohr. What about pesero.

I am not saying we should limit it to local coaches but sometimes you look at your home and take decisions based on what you have st home.

Can we pay pitso. Can pitso handle the nonesense that go on in our system. Pitso won with clubs in sane society and system not the likes we have here.

I also believe it’s wrong to say segun odegbami is old and mediocre. He expressed his views from his long years of being an active player in this industry.

At least none if you here have been active in the system more than him.

He may not be right all the time but looking at his article he made some valid point.

He expressed views about Africa that are bigger than just hiring coaches. When is Africa going to shed that inferiority complex and the mentality of whites are always better. This is not racism. It’s just a question that requires a deep answer.

      • @Christuan Ministries you are saying that Quote when are we going to shed the notion that whites are always better.. bros sometimes its not by Force Haba Whites are better in organisational Structure than Nigerians period yes we are smart people but we have one big problem and that big problem is bigger than ball and I am afraid will not go away for Centuries to come, that problem is TRIBALISIM, BIGORTY, SENTIMENT and CORRUPTION. HOHA! now couple all these and pair with the European system of Good Organisation and functionality along with Minimal Corruption you would admit or at least Admit that they are ahead and it proves by their Advanced leagues and teams we see it year in year out on UCL and World Cups and how they harness our talents i.e. Osimhen , Boniface and Co SO they are ahead of us, Now whats the point of Campaigning for Confusion so close to a big game against South Africa Or do we want a Repeat of Ghana in 2022???. No tell me!.. I am Sorry but I am not for this Self destruction and possible disastrous change in Destiny MBANO!. Because, that is what it will be if South Africa Knock Nigeria out of World Cup ’26

      • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

Let me answer your question on “When is Africa going to shed that inferiority complex and the mentality of whites are always better”

We will shed that mentality when we have finally proven we are better.

Or have we shown that…..? Have we shown we are better…? Has the level of structure, organization, administration and economy of our African societies proven to be better…??

Yoruba will say “ajanaku koja mo ri nkan firi….bi a ba ri erin e je ka gba pe a ri erin” meaning an elephant is not something you can claim you saw in a flash…..its too big to claim you saw it in a flash…..if you have seen something huge agree that you have seen something huge.

Have we managed our resources better and have we looked to do things better than the rest of the world…?

Have we organized our leagues better…? Have we produced better footballing structures in our FAs…? Have we proven to be better developed in grassroots football development….? Have we proven to be better trained than the rest of the world….??

If whites are better agree they are better. Otherwise why are your brother “japa-ing” from their own homelands, sometimes through hellish desert travels and perilous boatrides over the oceans, to come eke a living and make name for themselves in the same white man’s land who you want to drag equality with.

Its always hypocritical when a blackman sits in Europe or the Americas where he earns his daily bread and claims the whites are not better…..LMAOoo. Oga if they are not better, why are you not living and working in your village back in Africa at the moment…??

And before you, dig up the colonialism nonsense as excuse, Most Asian countries were diplomatically, economically and developmentally at par with Africa half a century ago, but today we dare not even call them our equals now. Yet this people swallow their pride to go get the best hands they can muster at various points in time to manage their football

I just presented an analogy up there, would you rather give the job to an Amuneke whose biggest achievement in the last 5 years is winning 2 competitive games as coach of Tanzania or would you give it to a Pitso Mosimane who has won about 7 or 8 major trophies in the same period….??

Or is Pitso a whiteman too….??

If you have look at home and you cannot find an Onigbinde who just won the CAF Cup winners cup recently, or an Amodu who just won his 3rd FA Cup, a WAFU cup and a CAF cup in the last 5 years, or a Stephen Keshi who just led Togo to the World cup in a group comprising Senegal, Mali and Republic of Congo……is it not just common sense you should look towards your neighbour’s compound where a certain Pitso who just became the first man to reach 3 consecutive CAF CL finals, a competition your own local coaches struggle to reach its group stages even with the strongest and richest teams from the local league…..???

No foreign coach has ever won the world cup does not mean Saudi Arabia should expect to win the world cup in 2036 with a Saudi Coach. Winning a world cup goes beyond the nationality of the coach. France has won the world cup with what I will call an “African Team”, but let those same boys play for their original countries and let see if they would even make it beyond the R16.

As much as we want to peddle that fallacy of hasty generalization that No foreign coach has ever won the world cup, we should also come to an agreement that only 8 nations have ever won the world cup in 100 years, so if anybody wants to win the world cup, he must get a coach from any of those 8 countries to stand a chance.

There were thousands of local coaches in Egypt before Alhaly went to sign the FIRST EVER BLACK MAN TO COACH THE TEAM in person of Pitso Mosimane, and did he disappoint…??? CAPITAL NO…!!! The man nearly won 3 straight CAF titles and won a bronze at the FIFA Club world cup for them.

That same Pitso is currently available, he has expressed willingness to work with Nigeria despite knowing all about the “nonsense” going on in our system.

Would you rather bring a serial acheiver to work in this nonsense system or a less than average hand to work in the same nonsense system….??

And point of correction, Zidane was already doing his coaching badges even whilst playing at Real Madrid, after retirement he was already coach of Real Madrid Castilla, Real Madrid reserves and assistant first team coach before being promoted to First team coach, ably aided by the fact that he was already a part of an established system and structure.

Does Zidane’s reluctance to take up another coaching job since leaving the Real Madrid system not raise an eyebrow…?

So if we want to make comparisons or copy from others……we should rather learn to compare and copy holistically rather than the selective comparison we keep making.

Senegal, Algeria and CIV has won the last 3 AFCON supposedly with “local coaches” but we have refused to admit that their “local coaches” are all as french as any other frenchman with a white skin and the fact that their technical crews were dominated by “foreingers” (who have proven capabilities) like them too. The next thing now is that we want to copy Senegal, Algeria and CIV without copying holistically and working within the circumstances and sustainability of their own approaches.

I think the Racism and triablistic sentimentalism in most of you is the biggest problem y’all are having right now. Otherwise I can suggest not less than 10 coaches of African origin who merit the job of the SE ahead of these 1994 tin-gods with tattered CVs whom y’all are parading as messiahs. You all are complaining Ladan Bosso is being “recycled”, yet in the same fell swoop rooting for local guadiolas who have been part of failed SE coaching setups in the last 10-15 years.

Go for Pitso Mosimane…. He has the pedigree, African football experience, understand the quality of the Nigerian players and the tactical exposure to organise our team. He has the managerial skills and will command respect of the Nigerian players both home and abroad.

He will be able to convince Nigerians abroad with great skills set to opt for Nigeria.

We need a coach with personality and experience. A coach that can imbibe solidity in the team organisation from the goal keeping to the attack…a good coach that can infuse on the team that immediate winning mentality no matter the opposition… starting with the next FIFA window match…

Let’s be pragmatic and stop with this local content coaching mentality when it is very obvious that we don’t have what we are searching to have amongst the larger of Nigerian coaches. Corruption, lack of expertise, inexperience, no pedigree, lack of adequate exposure to command respect from players and other stakeholders… convincing our talent players abroad will become herculean because they lack personality, issues of nepotism and game knowledge are all issues the local content will bring forth and the NFF will not respect them, no matter what you advocate – they’ll be there as coaches but a kind of ‘servant coach’…. you know what I mean!

Please, go for Pitso Mosimane, if he applies for the job…my take

I support chief odegbami. He speaking the mind of a true African. NFF give an indigenous coach a chance. Let it be for better for worst. We’ll get there. I am in big support of bringing in an indigenous coach to coach all the football teams in Nigeria.

Hehehehe…it was “for better for worse” until we found ourselves ranked in 70th position in the world and our players couldn’t secure work permit to play in the EPL due to our terrible ranking. Up stepped Rohr to the rescue.

It was also for better for worse when we were disgraced out of both 2022 AFCON and WC by the worst teams of their generation, losing millions of $US in the process, money that would have developed our football all round, from the players to the Administration to even the viewing centre owners on the streets, b4 Pesrio too now came to restore some dignity to the brand called SE.

Oga, pls be careful of the kinds of better and worse you wish our football. A lot of livelihoods revolve around our SE

Go ahead and support the white coaches that are better organized and structured. With all the qualifications of Pitso, why hasn’t he being considered for a job at a top European national team or club. Al Ahly is a top club with quality players, he is fortunate to be coaching their. We have yet to hear his name being considered for a top European job. Maybe Bayern, Liverpool etc we come calling since he has won 3 CAF championship. Thought oga Rorh also would have being considered for a Job at a top European club or country since he has the pedigree to win qualifiers with games to spare. still waiting for Benin to meet such target. Have told you leave our own and go folow your white oyinbo coaches.

  • This man is speaking crap, as usual. Comparing Westerhi\of to the likes of Eguavoen is criminal. Clemens took us to the final of AFCON, losing narrowly to the hos in the final. If Eguavoen had done this, would anyone complain? But the dude crashed out in the round of 16. If these white coaches use our so-called star-studded players to launch their careers, why couldn’t our local coaches do the same?

  • …. and Peseiro didnt target a semi-final finish; the NFF set the target.

  • SUPER EAGLES MIGHT NOT GO TO WORLD CUP IF ALL THESE LOCAL COACHES ARE GIVING THE JOB. I CAN’T BET ANYONE

IF THAT YOUNG TACTICAL ANGOLA COACH HAS APPLIED FOR THE JOB. GIVE TO HOM STRAIGHT. GOD BLESS NIGERIA

    • I forgot to add, they arrange Joseph yobo into assistant coach. You people think football of this present age is by ex intranational or rocket science.
